Top Dark Tourism Destinations For The Adventurous Soul: Part 1

Dark tourism is described as tourism that involves traveling to places around the world that are associated with tragedy, death, and destruction. They typically come with creepy stories that attract people with insatiable curiosities about everything eerie. Here are the top dark tourism destinations from around the world:

1. Pompeii, Italy

Lying at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, the city of Pompeii attracts many dark tourists every year. In 79 AD, the volcano erupted engulfing the ancient city in volcanic ash and killing every living thing in its path. Pompeii’s almost perfectly preserved nature due to the volcanic ash gives us a very good look into how life was in this Roman town. That’s one of the reasons why tourists and dark tourist alike visit the world-famous heritage site.

2. The Paris Catacombs, France

When you think of Paris, what typically comes to mind is romance and love. When it comes to the Paris Catacombs, though, it’s the complete opposite. 300 feet beneath the city streets, lies an underground world worthy of dark tourism. At the end of the 18th century, Paris was beginning to be overpopulated and struggled with taking care of the dead. It was then that authorities decided to transfer the deceased underground. Around 6 million Parisians were transferred to the Catacombs, making it one of the creepiest spots in the world to visit - perfect for dark tourists!

3. Hiroshima, Japan

One of the deadliest catastrophes in the world occurred in Hiroshima, Japan near the end of WWII. An atomic bomb dropped by the US Army Air Forces decimated the city killing more people instantly than any other man-made tragedy in the world. It’s no wonder dark tourists come to visit the destroyed city, even though there’s not much left of the old city of Hiroshima. For dark tourism, that’s no problem.

This dark twist on tourism has been gaining traction around the world, but definitely not for the faint of heart! If you aren't willing to venture off to these places, maybe you can just read about them instead in the comfort of your own home.
