Top Dark Tourism Destinations For The Adventurous Soul: Part 2

Dark tourism has been getting more popular lately, but it’s always been a thing in the world of travel and adventure. If you didn’t read part 1 of this dark tourism two-part series, go ahead and catch up! Here are some more dark tourism destinations for all those adventurous souls out there:

1. Suicide Forest, Japan

In the northwest base of Mount Fuji lies a forest called Aokigahara, recently more known internationally as Suicide Forest. Its terribly tragic name comes from the fact that it’s probably the most prevalent suicide sites in the world. It’s said to be extremely haunted by demons and ghosts of the dead, making visitors go crazy. Still, it attracts dark tourists from far and wide regardless of any scary presence.

2. Chernobyl, Ukraine

Being one of the worst and well-known nuclear disasters in the world, Chernobyl hits the spot for many people in dark tourism. A power plant in the remote north of Ukraine exploded, leaving radioactive particles in the air and making it very dangerous for human beings to be exposed to. Still to this day, radioactivity levels are high, and its long-term effects are hard to quantify. This, however, doesn't seem to stop dark tourists from visiting the disaster zone and seeing the catastrophe for themselves.

3. Alcatraz, San Francisco, USA

Alcatraz Island is one of the most popular dark tourism sites in the world. The former prison island housed many notorious criminals, namely Al Capone, the most infamous mobster in US history. It was there where he went insane and blamed it on Alcatraz. About 1,500 dangerous men did time on the island, some of which didn’t leave alive. It’s said to be haunted by all the convicts, which draws in dark tourists with the hopes of seeing some ghosts.

There are so many places around the world that attract dark tourists, satisfying their adventurous curiosity of everything creepy. There are tons of books out there that you can read to learn more about these destinations and assess for yourself if you want to become part of the dark tourism “society”. Try reading Whitey - The Life of America’s Most Notorious Mob Boss, by Dick Lehr, for a more in-depth look at Al Capone’s life and how he got to the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.
