Tales of Real Life Adventures

We all love to be swept away by a good story, one of impossible odds and defiance of death, but sometimes those stories are based on real life events. Here are two tales of real life adventures that are sure to get your blood pumping.

In The Heart Of The Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick. "An extraordinary tale of epic survival against near-impossible odds" according to Philbrick himself. Adapted into a major motion picture of the same name in 2015, In The Heart Of The Sea tells the tale of the loss of the Whaleship Essex in the Pacific Ocean in 1820 after an unfortunate encounter with an enraged sperm whale. Left with nothing but 3 small whaleboats and limited supplies, the 21 surviving seamen brave the 2,000 mile journey to safety.

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. In Into The Wild, Krakauer tells the captivating tale of Christopher McCandless by expanding on his 9000-word essay titled "Death of an Innocent". Krakauer retraces McCandless’s steps through the rugged terrain of Alaska as he braved the elements on a solo voyage to make an new life for himself. The book focuses heavily not just on the details of the voyage but also on issues of socialization and survival in the wilderness, all while it also paints a vivid picture of the rough Alaskan wilderness. Into the Wild was adapted into a feature film in 2007.
